What is a pressure pump?
A pressure pump is used to create a set amount of pressure, either high or low. They’re sometimes associated with metering pumps, which are mechanisms that allow users to control adjustable rates of flow to precise specifications. Although not all pressure pumps are adjustable, they are designed to create specific pressures according to a user’s needs. They’re also closely related to booster pumps, which are designed to give water sufficient pressure to travel long distances.
How do they work?
When working with pressure pumps it’s important to understand the difference between pressure and flow. Larger pumps generally move fluids at much higher rates of flow. Smaller, high-powered pumps are usually used to create high levels of pressure with lower rates of flow. As the name indicates, pressure pumps focus primarily on pressure. Some may have high rates of flow - these pumps are usually used in very large municipal or industrial fluid applications because having both high pressure and high flow requires massive amounts of power.
Where are they used?
There are two main categories of applications for pressure pumps: applications that employ the mechanical energy of a moving fluid, often through closed-chamber positive displacement pumps such as piston pumps or plunger pumps; and in irrigation pumps where water needs to be jetted over an area of crops.
