Pfieiffer Vacuum Introduces First-Ever Magnetically Coupled and ATEX Certified Roots Pumps

The advantages of magnetic coupling in potentially explosive areas are well-known. Pfeiffer Vacuum, a German pump manufacturer with more than 120 years of experience, has now built the world’s first magnetically coupled and ATEX certified Roots pumps for the vacuum market.

Pfieffer Vacuum’s established Roots pumps were further developed and tested for this certification and named OktaLine ATEX. The OktaLine pumps can be safely used in explosive areas or for evacuating explosive gases, and are ideal for chemical and process technology applications, industrial applications, coating, the semi-conductor industry and more according to the ATEX directive (94/9/EC).

Roots pumps are hermetically sealed; despite very low leakage rates of less than 1x10-6 Pa m3/s, shaft sealing rings are inherent weak points against pressure surges in addition to being high-maintenance. Pfieffer Vacuum’s new product line improves on the original design by introducing magnetic coupling, which omits shaft sealing rings for lower maintenance and less downtime for the end user. The magnetic coupling also ensures no contact between process related internal and external atmosphere.

The OktaLine ATEX series can handle flows from 280 m³/h to 5,190 m³/h and are resistant to pressure surges of up to 1,600 kPa. Several other features, including technically dry operation, separation of the gear box and bearing areas from the gas pumping chamber, and the use of air cooling versus water cooling make OktaLine ATEX pumps less expensive and more efficient.
