Ruhrpumpen, a global centrifugal pump manufacturer, recently supplied 92 pumps to Spanish multinational oil and gas company Repsol. The pumps were manufactured in Ruhrpumpen’s Tulsa, Oklahoma facility and are now installed in Repsol’s newly expanded Cartagena Industrial Refinery in Spain.

Based in Spain, Repsol is the world’s 15th largest petroleum refining company. In 2011, the company’s Cartagena Industrial Refinery underwent expansion that would increase capacity from 100,000 barrels/day to 220,000 barrels/day (5 million tons annually to 11 million tons annually).

With a total investment of 3.1 billion Euro and over 200,000 people involved in the construction and operation process, the Cartagena Refinery expansion project is one of the largest industrial investments in Spain.

Now connected to the Puertollano refinery by a new 357kms of oil pipeline, Cartagena is a valuable port for the supply of fuel. With this refinery expansion, Spain will be able to decrease diesel and kerosene imports by 34.5%, saving nearly $300 million euro annually. Additionally, the refinery provides jobs to 3,000 employees.

The 92 pumps supplied by Ruhrpumpen consisted of different vertical and horizontal models, mostly constructed according to API standards. Now fully equipped, the Cartagena refinery is one of the most efficient in Europe and will produce less-heavy products and more modern specification automotive fuels.
