WEG Launches ATEX-Compliant Geared Motors

WEG, a manufacturer of pump motors, drives, and controls for the oil and gas, energy, steel, food and beverage, and energy efficiency industries, has recently launched ATEX-compliant geared motors for companies that operate under hazardous conditions. The new geared motors combine gear units from WEG’s subsidiary Watt Drive with W22 motors. The new range is designed for a wide variety of harsh processing applications in nearly any industry worldwide. The geared motors are available in a range of frame sizes from IEC 71 to IEC 800, as well as energy efficient classes up to IE4.

The new geared motors are unique because they offer Watt Drive’s full range of gear units, which can be combined with W22X motors that use IEC adapters. Gear ratios in the MAS gear unit product line and all drive and flange options are possible, which includes a solid shaft with a flange, as well as a hollow shaft with a shrink disk. Every geared motor is compliant with ATEX standards. The motors also feature impact-resistant hollow shaft or shrink covers. Accidental loosening is prevented with secure bolts, and high temperature-resistant oils are also used.

ATEX 95 certified adapters allow motors with IEC B5 mounting to be attached to modular Watt gear units without any modifications. Frame sizes from 71 to 225 can all work with IEC B5 mountings.

Larger frame sizes of between 100 and 225 offer torque transfer between the motor and gear unit. This is handled with form-fitting, zero-backlash claw couplings that dampen vibration and shock with an elastic coupling spider (98 Shore A). If needed, return stops can be integrated into the IEC adapters. This allows explosive-proof drives to be used in applications where reverse operation must be prevented, which includes applications that rely on angled conveyor belts.
