More information on well pumps:

A well pump is used to draw water from an underground water source. The pump configuration needed depends mainly upon the depth of the water table. When the water table is near the surface, jet pumps are commonly used. For areas where the water table is deeper, a submersible pump is generally used. Submersible pumps are generally more power-efficient than jet pumps, but, since they sit so far below the ground, they are difficult to service.
